Study in UK & Greece

Timeframe

I will offer four study abroad programmes over 2023-24 of three to four weeks in duration: two in Greece and two in the UK. The dates coincide with the major academic holidays. Ancient and Byzantine Greece, a three-week winter intersession course, runs from late December to Mid-January. The Summer has three programmes of closer to a month: May/June Greek History Ancient to Modern; June/July Prehistory to the Norman Conquest in the British Isles; July/August Roman and Medieval England. If you would like to find out more about my summer and winter study abroad programmes in ancient Greek culture and Medieval history, please don’t hesitate to get in touch to discuss your particular interests and requirements.

Courses

Each study abroad programme will offer two courses with essay midterms and finals and a paper. The courses will have required readings, but the main focus will be on lectures, provided electronically, and on-site visits. There is no substitute for seeing sites and learning on the spot.

Cost

Each international study programme will cover all in-programme costs, including accommodation, entrance fees, food allowance and travel within the programme. Please note that your airfare to and from the programme will not be included in the cost. You must arrange and pay for this in advance. I will draw a salary and costs, as will my assistant, but, unlike university programmes, I will not charge fees for courses. See individual programme pages for the cost of each programme.

Applications

There is a nonrefundable application fee of $20 or the equivalent rounded up to the nearest currency unit due on application. When you click on the apply now button, you will be prompted to upload your unofficial academic transcript and an essay of approximately 300-350 words. In the essay you will explain your interest in the study abroad programme, its relevance for your education, personal or formal, and why I should accept you. After applications come in, I will schedule a video chat with you to answer questions and get a sense of your interests and commitments. There will be a waitlist in the event of a large number of applicants.

Deposits and Payments

A nonrefundable deposit of $500 or the equivalent rounded up to the nearest currency unit will be due within a week after acceptance. If the deposit is not paid promptly, your acceptance will be revoked. Final payment of all programme costs is due up to two months before the beginning of the programme. Payment will be made by transfer to the relevant currency account of the company’s Wise account. Nonpayment of final costs will result in expulsion from the programme and loss of deposit. In the event of unforeseen programme cancellation, the deposit and final payment will be refunded, but not the application fee.

Housing

Greek programmes stay in hotels, which are usually three star. UK programmes stay either in university dorms or in hotels. Students will likely have roommates – though on some occasions, dorms may offer single rooms.

Food

Breakfast is included in the hotel stays, and can be included at some dorms. The food allowance for the rest of the day is £25 in the UK and €25 in Greece. I usually provide a list of recommended bakeries, cafes and restaurants in major locations, but you are of course free to eat where you choose. I disburse food allowances weekly at the beginning of the week. You will sign a form to acknowledge receipt at the time of disbursement.

Personal learning or formal education

Students can take my Study Abroad Programmes in Greece and the UK for personal education or as academic courses based on the North American academic model. The programmes do not have accreditation with universities yet, but I will collaborate with you in advance to try to secure that at your institution. Given my emeritus status and the academic rigour of my courses, I have significant professional credibility.

Code of Conduct

My courses are academically rigorous. I expect hard work and strong engagement. The programmes are not holidays nor are they an opportunity for parties. All drugs and drinking in rooms are strictly prohibited. I will expel disruptive and drunken students or those who bring the programme into danger
